This was my first Mother's Day at home (last year we were in Russia on Mother's Day) and it was the best feeling. Just hearing "Mommy", albeit a THOUSAND times a day, is wonderful! :) In the past few weeks, Alik has really started talking up a storm. He's starting to put sentences together. Today, in church, he decided he was ready to go. So, he started putting all of his church toys back into the bag. Then he said, "Daddy car go home." He wasn't too happy when he realized we weren't leaving quite yet. Luckily that was towards the end of the service anyway. He loves to put the offering in the plate and is so proud of himself when he does it. He claps and says "Hooray!" He really is a good boy in church and, as long as he has a snack, we rarely have to take him out of the church.

Getting ready for Christmas
Meeting Santa...As Santa walked down the train of the car, Alik was beside himself trying to climb over the seat and saying "Santa, Santa, Santa". But, as soon as Santa got to our seat and sat down, he became a little more cautious. He was o.k. until Santa tried to pick him up and put him on his lap. Then he was reaching for me saying "Mama, Mama, Mama". We were able to get a few "action shot" pictures (like the one above) but even when I put him on my lap and sat beside Santa, he was unhappy. He wanted no part in sitting on this strange man's lap. It's like that in every day life too. Alik is an extremely friendly little guy and the life of the party. However, if you are forward with him, he doesn't like it. He tends to check people out for a little while and then he'll start pulling them around the room by their hands if he deems it's safe.

My Little Soccer Star...and other interests
Alik has been really into balls lately. One day, he took a soccer ball out of his basket and just started dribbling it around the room. Stephen and I looked at each other in shock. Granted, he sees us doing it (me, not so well), but were surprised to see him pick it up that quickly. Now, his favorite thing to do is to run around the room saying "ki", "ki" (kick, kick) while kicking the soccer ball. Just yesterday, he started doing this thing where he kicks the ball, takes a few more steps, and throws himself to the carpet while saying "Uh" (with a giggle). Then, he gets up and does it again. Another one of his favorite things (on the weekends) lately is watching football. He'll look at the TV and say "fooball?". So, I think he might be "tackling" himself. I guess he's confusing his sports!
This past week while Stephen was out of town, we spent a few days with my parents. They took us to see some trains in a mall close by. Alik has been really into "choo-choo"s too. When we got home, my Dad got out my brother's old battery operated train set and he and Alik put it together. Alik liked it. Callie wasn't so sure!

A Pumpkiny Weekend

The highlight of Sunday's trip was Alik's very first pony ride. I don't think you could find a happier little guy at that moment! He smiled the entire time and kept patting the pony's mane. He was so excited that he started bouncing at one point. Good thing the pony didn't realize it and take that as the "go faster" kick!

Life is good
This past weekend we had Alik baptized. For years, I would get teary every time another child was baptized at our church. I couldn't wait for the day when we'd be the ones baptizing our own child. Of course, the funny thing was, I didn't get very teary at Alik's. I was too busy trying to keep the squirmy wormy from jumping out of my arms. My polite little guy kept saying "down" and saying "please" in sign language. We normally go to early church but held his baptism at late church so that all our friends and family could make it more easily. But, this was Alik's naptime. Plus, he was starting a little cold. Then, when the pastor was trying to bless him, he kept trying to push his hand away. SO, embarrassing! But, everyone thought it was cute. When the pastor walked him up the aisle to introduce him to the congregation, Alik had a look on his face like he was getting in trouble for his behavior in the front. But, when the congregation clapped for him, he started clapping too. What a little character he is! And, we're enjoying every minute.
I think he's even more fun now than when we first brought him home. He's communicating so much more and can say over 40 words. Not all of those 40 words are crystal clear yet but he knows what they mean (and so do we). He loves to color, play outside in the sandbox, hit golf balls, and dance to music. We laugh and laugh when he dances. He looks like one of the characters from Night at the Roxbury when he bobs his head to the side and spins in circles. What fun it is having a child!!!
Uncle Andrew got Alik a Ravens hat and jersey. Yesterday he brought them over to me and wanted to put them on. He paraded around the house in his outfit for several hours. Luckily the jersey is so big that he'll be able to enjoy wearing it for many years!

Mommy's Top Ten
Alik surprises us every day with new sounds, expressions, etc. This is such a fun age because he's like a little sponge! Here are some of my new favorite things that he does or has done in the past month....
1. I bought him a play cell phone at Target that I can record a message on. The message I left was, "Hello Alik! I love you!" The first time he heard it, he blew a kiss. I guess whenever I tell him I love him, I follow it with a kiss. So cute!
2. He's almost mastered the entire barnyard. When we ask him "What does a ____ say?", he knows how to "moo", "baa", "nay" (this one sounds a lot like a sheep though), "meow", "ruff, ruff", "whoooo", and my new favorite farm animal "doodle doo" (in a high pitched voice) for rooster. That one gets me every time!
3. He's moved beyond the barnyard now and can also "oo, oo, oo" like a monkey and "roar" like a lion. The lion is actually his clearest animal sound. He says that one with zest and ranks as my 2nd favorite sound!
4. He's started nodding his head "yes" in response to questions. We don't think he completely understands what it means, but he certainly knows when a question is being asked that needs a response.
5. I know I'll regret saying THIS is a few months (weeks?), but, right now I think it's cute when he says, "na, na, na" (meaning "no, no, no") when he doesn't want to do something.
6. If he wants something done that he can't do (such as flipping a switch on a toy to turn it on), he'll actually take my finger, drag it over to the toy's switch, and make my finger turn it on.
7. Similar to #6, when we read books (which is A LOT), I'm always pointing to things in the book as I read. So, now he'll sometimes take MY finger and point to something on the page with it before I do it myself.
8. You know that game of trust, where you stand with your back to a person and fall into their arms, trusting that he/she will catch you? Alik apparently likes to play a version of this. If he knows you're sitting close by, he'll slowly walk backwards until his heel hits you. Then he'll literally fall backwards into our laps or arms.
9. He's definitely exerting his independence lately. If he could say, "I do it myself!!!", I know we'd be hearing it all the time. He always wants to walk in the stores now instead of being carried or put in a cart (not always a good thing). He likes to walk up the stairs by himself. Unfortunately, he won't crawl up or down but has to walk like a big boy by pulling himself up the rungs and taking steps on his feet. I don't like this because it'll be a long time before he's big enough to do this safely without someone standing behind him.
10. Have I mentioned what a big "helper" he is? :) See pictures below for examples of how he "helps" me every day....

Vacuuming - I hoped that by buying him his own vacuum, he'd let me use mine. Nope, he's still more interested in mine.
